The research investigates whether performed acts of ‘Queer Extimacy’ can generate new narratives and voices on the gender spectrum, using my own experience of gender and my subsequent performances as an example.

This research uses alter egos to articulate identity tropes hidden within my body, with an emphasis on the role of the voice. The research uses a comparative methodology, analysing the qualities and discrepancies between gender within a binary system and the more nuanced articulation of gender on a spectrum. The applied methods within the practice are masks, alter egos, storytelling, monstering, queer space and psychoanalysis. The written analysis of the work uses Lacanian ideas including extimacy, the mirror stage, das Ding, object petit a, and the voice as an unobtainable object of desire. Over the course of the research performing Queer Extimacy is an active catalyst in creating an understanding of queer identity on the gender spectrum.
